Choosing the Right Model

Last updated: March 2026

How to choose a model

The model you choose determines how your agent thinks, responds, and how much each conversation costs. With 780+ models available across 23 providers, the options can feel overwhelming. This guide helps you pick the right model for your specific use case.

The key factors to consider are quality (how accurate and nuanced the responses are), speed (how quickly the model generates a reply), and cost (how much you pay per message through your AI provider). Higher-quality models tend to be slower and more expensive, while budget-friendly models respond faster but may produce less nuanced answers.

Model comparison table

Here are six popular models that cover the most common use cases. All of these are available through OneClickClaw with no restrictions:

Note

You can switch models at any time. Changes take effect on the next message your agent receives. There is no downtime, no restart, and no penalty for switching. Experiment freely to find the best fit.

Model categories by use case

Different use cases call for different models. Here is a practical guide organized by what you need your agent to do:

  • General conversation: Claude Sonnet 4 and GPT-4o are the best all-around choices. They handle complex questions, multi-step instructions, and nuanced conversations with ease. Most OneClickClaw users start here.
  • Coding assistance: Claude Sonnet 4 and GPT-4o excel at generating, explaining, and debugging code. If your agent helps developers, these models produce the most accurate results.
  • Cost-optimized: DeepSeek V3 delivers strong quality at a fraction of the cost. Llama 3.3 70B through OpenRouter is completely free. These are ideal for high-volume scenarios where cost matters more than peak quality.
  • Multi-language: Gemini 2.5 Pro and Claude Sonnet 4 handle non-English languages well. If your audience communicates in Greek, German, Spanish, or other languages, these models maintain quality across translations.
  • Real-time knowledge: Grok 3 from xAI has access to more recent information than most models. If your agent needs to discuss current events or trending topics, Grok is a strong choice.

Tip

Not sure which model to pick? Start with Claude Sonnet 4 or GPT-4o. They offer the best balance of quality, speed, and cost for most use cases. You can always switch later based on your actual usage patterns.

Switching models

Changing your model is quick and requires no restart:

1

Open the Agent Control Panel

From your dashboard, navigate to your instance and click the Agent tab.

2

Select a new model

In the Model dropdown, browse or search for the model you want. The list shows all models available for your currently selected provider.

3

Save your changes

Click Save. The change takes effect immediately. Your agent uses the new model for all future messages. There is no downtime or restart required.

Tip

If you are comparing models, try running the same conversation with two different models and compare the results. You can switch back and forth as many times as you like at no extra cost (you only pay for the tokens each model actually consumes).

Managing AI costs

Because OneClickClaw uses a BYOK model, your AI costs depend entirely on which provider and model you choose. Here are practical strategies to keep costs under control:

  • Start with a mid-tier model. Claude Sonnet 4 and GPT-4o offer excellent quality at reasonable prices. You can always upgrade to a more powerful model or downgrade to save costs once you know your typical conversation volume.
  • Monitor your provider dashboard. Each AI provider has its own usage dashboard where you can track spending, set budget alerts, and view per-model costs. Check it weekly.
  • Set spending limits. Most providers let you set monthly spending caps. Enable this to prevent unexpected charges, especially when experimenting with new models.
  • Use free models for testing. OpenRouter offers several free models (like Llama 3.3 70B). Use these for initial testing and prompt development before switching to a paid model for production.

Note

AI provider pricing changes frequently. Always check your provider's pricing page for the most current rates. OneClickClaw does not add any markup to your AI usage costs.
